''Music is an extension of our soul. Songs can transport us back in time, console us in times of darkness, make us crack the accelerator wide open driving down the highway or keep our pace while working out. Music can bring tears of joy, laughter to sadness and pure RAGE. Music is our most emotional tool for immediate expression."
Music has kept me alive & this "DEEP ROOTS" Vol. 1 of Classic Country Songs represents my musical beginnings...my musical "Deep Roots".
Luke Sommer Glenn
The picture featured as the background of, "DEEP ROOTS" is near where my musical journey began with the birth of Talmage Bartley "Sam" Glenn. Must be a West Virginia thing to name somebody then call them something else. My dad learned to play from the radio because in 1930 that was the BIG thing on Saturday and Sunday night. Programs like "The Old Farm Hour", Louisiana Hay Ride, and of course the big one...the "Grand Ole Opry".
Dad learned to play a style of guitar the allowed him to play bass and melody lines along with the chords. He grew up "seconding after" fiddle players so he also learned to pick a lot of fiddle tunes on guitar. That's where the "Spanish Two Step" comes in.
Dad played and sang with his older sister, my Aunt Garnetta or "Dink" is what everyone called her. They played a few shows on the radio as teenagers but the Second World War ended any aspirations they had to play music.
When my siblings or my friends would come over to our house dad would say, "sit down right there and I'll play you the song that won World War Two" and he would break into "Under the Double Eagle" written by Josef Wagner.
I reckon I inherited my love for "heartache" songs from the old man. Those songs moved and touched my soul before I was old enough to understand exactly what they meant but they were MAGIC.
They stirred something deep within my soul that has been there since the very beginning of my being.
I hope you enjoy this "Free Collection of Songs" that meant so much to me as a young, aspiring singer/guitar picker. These are some of the songs I cut my teeth on, that make me sound like Luke Sommer Glenn and it sure ain't getting any prettier.
I hope you really dig this effort made entirely possible by Dan "The Coconut Cowboy" Furmanik without whom this effort wouldn't be possible. He shares the same love for these fine, classic country songs and has done his best to recreate all the excitement and love we felt when we first heard these songs along our musical journey.
Please enjoy responsibly and I hope you enjoy this "Hillbilly Electric Album". LSG
